PULLMAN, Wash. – Jansen VanderMeulen, former student body vice president at Washington State University, is the newest member of the WSU Board of Regents. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee last week finalized the appointment, which lasts through June 30, 2016.
“I am very excited for this opportunity to serve our university and state,” said VanderMeulen. “It is a great honor to have been chosen as the student voice on the Board of Regents, and I am grateful to Governor Inslee for his confidence in choosing me for this position.”
VanderMeulen succeeds Kevin Massimino in the student regent position.
“Regent VanderMeulen’s appointment continues the long tradition of strong student representation on the board,” said Interim WSU President Dan Bernardo. “I look forward to working with him on issues relevant to all of our students.”
VanderMeulen currently is completing undergraduate coursework for a degree in Spanish Language and Culture with a Political Science minor and a degree in Philosophy with a minor in Ethics; he will graduate in May 2016.
“As Student Regent, I want to ensure the student perspective is heard in this crucial time for our university, especially as it relates to choosing a new permanent president,” he said. “Dr. Floyd left enormous shoes to fill with his unparalleled legacy of service and accomplishment. It is on the university to find someone now who can continue and build on that legacy, and I am excited to be part of that process.
“I am also interested in making heard the voice of the student employee, which was of special interest to me as ASWSU Vice President, and in continuing the string of legislative successes the university has achieved in the last few legislative sessions,” he added.
