May 9: WSU Tri-Cities to graduate 345 students

RICHLAND, Wash. – Approximately 345 students will participate in the Washington State University Tri-Cities commencement at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Toyota Center, 7000 W. Grandridge Blvd. Doors open to the public at noon. The event is free and tickets are not required.

Among those graduating this year, approximately 283 students are earning bachelor’s degrees, 50 master’s and 12 doctorates.

The keynote address will be given by Beatriz Schweitzer, community outreach director of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories headquartered in Pullman, Wash.

Chancellor Keith Moo-Young will present the welcome address and confer degrees. He will present the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Hans Vogel, operations manager in the Neutron Science Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Michael Mays, vice chancellor for academic affairs, will present introductions and recognitions.

Rigo Leon, Associated Students of WSU Tri-Cities president, will present the graduate greeting, to be followed by the student address by 2015 class valedictorian Melissa Hammack.

Six students were chosen to carry gonfalons, which are colorful banners that represent the colleges. Those students include:

Jarrod Pack, agricultural, human & natural resource sciences
Josh Boardman, arts & sciences
Nicole Peters, business
Areli Lora, education
Andrew Fouts, engineering & architecture
Shelby Brunson, nursing

WSU Tri-Cities student Katie Bair will sing the national anthem.
