May 21: ‘Fungi’ first on new Science Pub menu

fungiPULLMAN, Wash. – Growing, hunting and preserving edible mushrooms will be discussed by two Washington State University researchers at the inaugural Science Pub 7- 9 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Paradise Creek Brewery downtown.

It is the first in a planned quarterly series arranged by the Palouse Discovery Science Center. Admission is free, though donations of $5 are suggested.

“Famous fungus throughout history” and “growing culinary mushrooms” will be the topics discussed by Zack Frederick, a Ph.D. student in plant pathology who recently has begun cultivating oyster mushrooms.

“Mushroom hunting” and “preserving edible mushrooms in wine” will be presented by Frank Dugan, a plant pathologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service located at WSU. Among the books he has authored are “Fungi in the Ancient World” and “Hidden Histories and Ancient Mysteries of Witches, Plants and Fungi.”
