RICHLAND, Wash. – More than 200 students will present more than 100 projects next week during the Undergraduate Research Symposium at Washington State University Tri-Cities.

“The symposium is a chance for students to practice communicating their research to a varied audience,” said Allison Matthews, coordinator and clinical assistant psychology professor. “Students will be presenting their projects to and answering questions from other students, faculty and members of the community.”

The first session will be noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in Consolidated Information Center (CIC) 120. The second session will be noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in CIC 120 and in the CIC Art Center gallery. The third session will be noon-1 p.m. Thursday, May 7, in the gallery.

Presentations in CIC 120 will be similar to poster sessions at professional research conferences. Attendees can walk through to see the various projects in each session.

Students from the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering will present research from a variety of disciplines including biology, horticulture, psychology, Spanish, electrical engineering, civil engineering and mechanical engineering.

Students from fine arts and digital technology and culture majors will exhibit their work.

Some of projects include the effects of diet on the morphological plasticity of zebrafish, the effects of educational intervention on the stigma of post-traumatic stress disorder, qualitative analysis of volatile compounds between oak alternatives and barrel wine using gas chromatography and a design and construction of a hydrogen fuel cell car.

“This is an excellent learning opportunity for our undergraduate students and a chance to highlight the remarkable work they have accomplished this semester,” Matthews said.
