April 29: Train to be a weather spotter in two-hour class

storm-readyPULLMAN, Wash. – The National Weather Service is looking for local weather-spotting volunteers. A free, two-hour recruitment/training course will be co-sponsored by Washington State University Emergency Management at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in CUE 202.

Parking is available in the CUE or Fine Arts garages for $3 after 5 p.m.

Co-sponsored by Whitman County Emergency Management, the class will be tailored to local weather. It will include information on weather service operations, products, services, the basics of thunderstorm development, severe thunderstorm structure, flash floods, high winds, spring and summer storms and spotter procedures.

WSU and the county hold national StormReady Recognition, which provides the skills and education needed to prepare for and survive severe weather. Local weather reports coupled with radar, satellite and other data enable the weather service to issue timely and accurate warnings for hazardous weather.
