PULLMAN, Wash. – Civic Engagement Week is April 19-25 at Washington State University, and the public is invited to participate in a charity fun run and food drive and to attend the annual leadership and engagement awards ceremony.
During the week, the WSU Center for Civic Engagement recognizes the efforts of WSU students, faculty, staff and community members to make a difference. The week’s events include:
Sunday, April 19: WSU Greek students will go door-to-door in Pullman 1:30-3:30 p.m. to collect non-perishable and canned goods, particularly those high in protein, for the Community Action Center Food Bank. Donations also can be dropped off at Dissmore’s IGA and Walmart 11 a.m.-7 p.m. April 21-23. For a list of suggested items to donate, visit http://cce.wsu.edu/suggesteddonations.
Tuesday, April 21: Water, Waste and Washington, a Public Square discussion about the California drought and Washington’s water future, will be noon-1 p.m. in the CUB Butch’s Den. Learn more, including how to access live streaming, at https://cce.wsu.edu/events/public-square/.
Wednesday, April 22: Earth Day community service projects for students include the Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute, Backyard Harvest, WSU Organic Farm, Palouse Conservation District and more. Thursday, April 23: The free, public Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction (LEAD) reception and ceremony at 5 p.m. in the CUB ballroom is a public celebration of student leaders and those who have mentored and supported their efforts towards leadership and social change. WSU President Elson S. Floyd and others will speak and present awards.
Since 1996, the President’s Award for Leadership has been bestowed annually on students and others who advance leadership and engagement at WSU. Awardees were reviewed using the framework of the social change model of leadership development. The 2015 award categories are student, student group, faculty or staff and community organization. Saturday, April 25: The Campus on the Run 5K fun run cosponsored with University Recreation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the WSU Student Recreation Center. The run will benefit Backyard Harvest.
