RICHLAND, Wash. – Community members in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields are invited to the launch of Washington State University Tri-Cities’ participation in the nationwide Million Women Mentors program.
The free, public event, which concludes WSU Tri-Cities’ celebration of Women’s History Month, will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 30, in the East Auditorium, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland, Wash. It will include a talk about mentoring by Dawn M. Wellman, manager of environmental health and remediation with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. A reception will follow.
The Million Women Mentors initiative (http://www.millionwomenmentors.org/) helps mentors connect with young women to mentor in STEM fields. It works in partnership with STEMconnector (http://www.stemconnector.org/), a nationwide public and private consortium of more than 50 leading national organizations promoting STEM education.
WSU Tri-Cities’ goals are to increase the percentage of young women pursuing undergraduate degrees in STEM fields and increase the percentage of women nationwide in STEM careers.
“It is no longer enough to tell our female students that they can be engineers or scientists – we need to give them an insider’s view of what it takes to succeed in these fields,” said Kate McAteer, assistant vice chancellor of academic affairs at WSU Tri-Cities.
