March 27: Big band jazz features grad student conductors

runkun li-80PULLMAN, Wash. – A concert of big band jazz by the Washington State University One O’Clock Jazz ‘Shop will be presented free to the public at 3:10 p.m. Friday, March 27, in Kimbrough Concert Hall.

bandThe program will include: Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone” as played by Oliver Nelson; Eric Applegate’s “Windmills;” Sammy Nestico’s “Back Home;” HerbieHancock’s “Watermelon Man;” WSU jazz bass professor F. David Snider’s arrangement of “Little Linda” as made famous by Spyro Gyra; and “Dark Energy” by One O’Clock Jazz ‘Shop trumpeter Alex Wolfe.

Graduate teaching assistant Alvin Delos Santos directs the group. Graduate student Runkun Li will be a special guest conductor. Featured soloists will include trumpeter Wolfe and saxophonist Delos Santos.

The concert is presented by the WSU School of Music and the Jazz Society at WSU.
