Reganold to receive Eminent Faculty Award; register today

ReganoldPULLMAN, Wash. – John P. Reganold will receive the 2015 Eminent Faculty Award from Washington State University during the Celebrating Excellence Recognition Banquet at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, part of WSU’s annual Showcase celebration of faculty, staff and student excellence.

The Eminent Faculty Award was created in 2000 to honor career-long excellence within WSU’s academic community. Reganold, a Regents professor in crop and soil sciences, is the 15th recipient of the highest honor the university bestows on a faculty member.

Reganold’s work in sustainable agriculture and land use has revolutionized the field. His papers in Nature, Science and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shifted understanding of the interactions between soils and agriculture in terms of long-term sustainability. He published what may be the seminal article on sustainable agriculture in Scientific American, and four of his publications in Science and Nature are considered classics.

He has been the principal investigator or research collaborator on more than $14 million worth of grants and gifts and has authored more than 170 refereed journal articles, book chapters and proceedings. His widely used textbook, “Natural Resource Conservation: Management for a Sustainable Future,” is in its 10th edition.

He has given more than 200 invited presentations all over the world, and his research in sustainable agriculture has been featured in hundreds of newspapers and science magazines and on many radio and TV programs.

In his 32 years of service to WSU, Reganold conducted research while teaching courses on soil science, land use and organic agriculture; chairing and serving on graduate committees; and serving as major advisor to most of the undergraduate soil science and organic agriculture systems majors.

He has been recognized with the R.M. Wade Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences and with WSU’s Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction. He recently received the Growing Green Award for Sustainable Food and Farm Educator from the Natural Resources Defense Council and Berkeley Food Institute.

Reganold earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in German and soil science from the University of California, Berkeley (1971, 1974) and a doctorate in soil science from the University of California, Davis in 1980.
