Brenda-Barrio-80PULLMAN, Wash. – An assistant professor of special education at the College of Education has been awarded an international honor for a student who shows great potential for future contribution to the field.

Brenda Barrio ( won the annual award from the Division of International Special Education & Services (DISES). Students are eligible for two years beyond graduation.

Barrio earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in 2013 and began working at Washington State University in fall 2014. Her dissertation explored the topic of general education pre-service teachers and response to intervention.

“I am impressed by Dr. Barrio’s commitment to social justice in her work and life,” said Darcy Miller, WSU teaching and learning department chair. “She works hard, she works in a collaborative fashion, she has great knowledge of both special education and general education, and she does a great job giving positive and supportive mentoring to both graduate and undergraduate students.”

Barrio is invited to a reception in San Diego in April to receive the award.
