March 12: Social justice events mark Women’s History Month

RICHLAND, Wash. – As part of Women’s History Month, Washington State University (WSU) Tri-Cities announces “Social Justice Night” on campus on March 12. This event includes the screening of The Pregnancy Project, a film based on a novel by WSU Tri-Cities senior Gaby Rodriguez, which describes her experience as a “pregnant” teen in rural Toppenish, Washington and explores issues of stereotypes.

Rodriguez attained worldwide fame for The Pregnancy Project, including appearances on the Today Show and Oprah. Rodriguez also wrote a popular book about her story, which was adapted into a Lifetime Channel movie that was recently released on Netflix. This is the first time the movie will be shared with her classmates on campus.

Also on March 12, “Unmasked: Exploration of Sociopolitical Issues Through Art”, a month-long exhibit, will have an opening reception at the Art Center in the WSU Tri-Cities Consolidated Information Center, 2710 Crimson Way, Richland. Featuring 35 contemporary student and community artists, the exhibit is a broad survey examining and raising awareness of a variety of cultural issues, including domestic violence, social injustice, and inequality. Senior Madison Rosenbaum is the curator of the art exhibition; the first time a student has done so on the WSU Tri-Cities campus.

“It is exciting to showcase these kinds of progressive events on the WSU Tri-Cities campus. I am proud of our students for their social awareness displayed by these amazing projects,” said Dr. Chris Meiers, vice-chancellor of enrollment and student services at WSU Tri-Cities. “The Pregnancy Project and the Unmasked exhibition will challenge students to explore their existing biases and thought processes regarding social justice and societal norms.”

The opening reception for Unmasked will be March 12 at 5 p.m. and will be on display until April 3.

The Pregnancy Project will screen at 6 p.m. in the Consolidated Information Center building, room 216, on the WSU Tri-Cities campus.

Both events are free and open to the public.
