Warehouse to be demolished Monday to make way for clinic

SPOKANE, Wash. – Crews will demolish a large portion of the former Peirone warehouse on the southeast edge of the Washington State University Spokane campus beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, March 2, and lasting one to two hours. The structure will be razed to make way for the new University District Health Clinic (UDHC), a project of the Spokane Teaching Health Consortium.

The location of the demolition is east of the WSU “Bookie” store at 410 E. Spokane Falls Blvd. Once the Peirone building is down, crew members will cut up the metal and other portions of the structure to prepare for hauling it away.

The warehouse is the largest of two buildings at the site. Together they make up 36,000 square feet. The smaller building will remain standing for now and be demolished at a later date.

Construction of the UDHC will begin this spring with plans to complete it by summer 2016. The clinic will provide collaborative care for low-income community members by medical residents who are part of the consortium, nursing and pharmacy students from WSU, and physical and occupational therapy and social work students from Eastern Washington University who share the campus.

Partners in the consortium are Providence Health Care and Empire Health Foundation. The medical residents currently offer healthcare service in the 5th and Browne Medical Building.

In September, the WSU Board of Regents approved a $16.2 million bond sale to fund construction of a new clinic on the campus.
