Transportation seeks input on parking increase proposal

parking-cars-150PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University Transportation Task Force is seeking comments on a proposed 1.9 percent increase in annual and daily parking rates on the Pullman campus for fiscal year 2016.

Chris Boyan, assistant director of Operations for WSU Transportation, said the proposed rate increase will be used to offset increases in operational expenses and is equivalent to the increase in the Consumer Price Index for 2014.

Boyan said WSU Transportation has experienced expense increases over the past two years beyond those anticipated at the time of the last parking rate increase three years ago. Those increases included LED garage lighting improvements intended to improve lighting and achieve energy savings, as well as upgrades to the parking management system including:

  • Meter replacement with Smart Meter technology
  • Handheld Ticketer upgrades
  • Garage gate hardware and software improvements
  • Parking permit vending machine upgrades

The amount of the annual increases will vary from $2.34 for a Blue permit to $12.23 for an Orange permit. A full listing of the amount of the proposed annual rate increase by parking permit type is available online at http://transportation.wsu.edu/prop_rates.html.

The deadline for feedback is February 28th. Comments should be sent by e-mail to transportation@wsu.edu.
