SPOKANE, Wash. – A university physician and researcher will give a progress report on the treatment of HIV at the 19th annual Robert F.E. Stier Lecture in Medicine on the Washington State University campus in Spokane.
The free, public lecture will begin at 4 p.m. March 6 in the South Campus Facility building. It will be preceded by the 10th annual Inland Northwest Research Symposium on campus highlighting faculty and student research in the health sciences.
David H. Spach, a professor of medicine in the infectious diseases division at the University of Washington, will talk about progress in HIV vaccine development, new prevention strategies, the quest for a cure and current treatment.
Spach is editor-in-chief of Hepatitis Web Study (www.hepwebstudy.org), Hepatitis C Online (www.hepatitisc.uw.edu) and HIV Web Study (www.hivwebstudy.org). He has published in numerous medical journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The Annals of Internal Medicine, Emerging Infectious Diseases and The Journal of Infectious Diseases. He has received multiple teaching awards.
He received an M.D. from Duke University and did postgraduate training at UW. He joined the UW faculty in 1992.
The purpose of the Stier lecture is to feature key leaders in medicine whose works have increased professional and public understanding of new technologies and challenging issues. The lectures are funded by an endowment established by Alton R. Stier, M.D., and Robert A. (Bud) Stier, M.D., in honor of their late father.
The research symposium begins at 11 a.m. with poster presentations. Oral presentations are scheduled 1:30-3:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend and interact with distinguished faculty and developing scholars presenting novel research from a variety of disciplines.
