Feb. 10: Jazz bands burst forth with ‘Premieres and Originals’

WSU-Jazz-Big-Band-80PULLMAN, Wash. – “Premieres and Originals,” a concert of big band jazz, will be presented free to the public at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Kimbrough Concert Hall at Washington State University.

The performance will feature the award-winning WSU Jazz Big Band, under the direction of regents professor Greg Yasinitsky, and the WSU One O’ Clock Jazz Shop, under the direction of graduate teaching assistant Alvin Delos Santos.

The program will include: the premiere of an arrangement by WSU jazz bass instructor F. David Snider of famed trumpeter Roy Hargrove’s “Strasbourg – St. Denis;” the premiere of Yasinitsky’s “Sideways,” composed especially for the Jazz Big Band; Count Basie composer Sammy Nestico’s “A Pair of Aces,” in honor of Nestico’s 90th birthday; Clifford Brown’s “Joy Spring,” as arranged by late WSU music professor Charles Argersinger; and Dave Mathews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin’s “Tall and Lanky.”

Featured soloists will include trumpeter Brian Ploeger, pianist Alberto Ferro, guitarist Andrew Dodge and saxophonists Michado Mijiga and Delos Santos.

The concert is presented by the WSU School of Music and the Jazz Society at WSU.
