pappu-80PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University plant pathology professor Hanu Pappu has been selected as a Fulbright specialist. He will organize laboratory workshops and provide training for faculty, staff and graduate students at Urgench State University in Uzbekistan this fall.

The program promotes collaboration between U.S. scholars and professionals and their international counterparts. Participants help expand the educational capacity of host institutions while forging long-term educational relationships through two- to six-week collaborative projects.

“I am looking forward to sharing my experience in program development and learning more about their food and agricultural sectors,” said Pappu. “This gives me an opportunity to further extend our institution’s international reach and impact.”

Pappu, the Sam Smith Distinguished Professor of Plant Virology at WSU, will participate in and lead seminars and workshops on molecular biology and agricultural biotechnology. He will provide hands-on training in genomics and molecular biology.

He will conduct needs assessments for developing genomics and molecular biotechnology research programs, consult on faculty development and capacity building, and assist in development of academic curricula. He will visit several universities and research institutes to deliver seminars and meet with faculty and students.

Fulbright specialists are selected by the U.S. Fulbright Commission in the U.S. Department of State. Candidates are evaluated and recommended by discipline peer review committees.
