PULLMAN, Wash. –. David A. Whidbee, associate dean for faculty affairs and research in Washington State University’s College of Business, has been named interim dean of the college effective May 12, replacing Eric R. Spangenberg.
Spangenberg has accepted a position as dean of the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine.
“We appreciate Dean Spangenberg’s leadership during his nine-year tenure,” said WSU Provost Dan Bernardo. “The college has made significant advancements, but with this appointment we are poised to make even greater progress as Dr. Whidbee has played an important role in the college’s accomplishments and can keep that momentum going.
“Dr. Whidbee is a seasoned administrator with a deep knowledge of the college, its faculty and the university,” Bernardo added, “and this appointment has the full support of President Floyd.”
Beginning early next fall, Bernardo said WSU will conduct a national search for a new dean by naming a search committee.
Whidbee, who holds the Omer L. Carey Chair in Financial Education, said he appreciates the opportunity to serve as interim dean.
“I am excited about the college’s future,” he said. “We have had great momentum, and I look forward to continuing to work with our faculty, staff and students to advance our current programs and initiatives while exploring new opportunities to maintain the college’s leadership position in on-campus and online business education.”
Whidbee joined WSU in 1997 as an assistant professor of finance. He was named associate dean for faculty affairs and research in July 2005. He leads the college’s efforts in accreditation reporting, undergraduate business programs and associated student services, and faculty reviews for tenure and promotion. He also serves on the college’s Executive Committee and participates in the college’s fundraising activities.
Whidbee’s research focuses on issues regarding commercial banking, corporate governance and financial institutions. He holds a Ph.D. from University of Georgia and earned his MBA and bachelor’s degree at Auburn University.
