Four WSU academic advisors receive national award recognition

PULLMAN, Wash.—Four months after receiving top awards from their local organization, Washington State University academic advisors Ruth Ryan, Patrick Carter, Shanna Pumphrey, and Alicia Peterson have received recognition for their outstanding work from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

“These four professionals have earned acclaim from the leading organization in our field, and we are very proud of them and the work they do to benefit students, the advising field, and our university,” says Brooke Whiting, chair of the WSU Academic Advising Association (ACADA).

“Since WSU ACADA began in 2008, we have had national award recipients, and Ruth, Pat, Shanna, and Alicia now join them in having that distinction.”

All four received certificates of merit in the NACADA awards competition. Similar to their WSU ACADA awards, Ryan’s NACADA certificate is in the category of Outstanding Advising Administrator Award; Pumphrey’s is in the Outstanding Advising Award-Primary Advising Role; Carter’s is in the Outstanding Advising Award-Faculty Academic Advising; and Petersen’s is in the Outstanding New Advisor Award-Primary Advising Role.

They will all be recognized at the NACADA national conference in October in Minneapolis, Minn., and will receive a one-year membership to NACADA.

In January, Petersen and Carter also won awards from NACADA Region 8. Petersen received the NACADA Region 8 Excellence in Advising-New Advisor Award. Carter received the NACADA Region 8 Faculty Academic Advisor Award-Certificate of Merit.

Ryan is an associate director of the Center for Advising and Career Development (CACD), part of the WSU Office of Undergraduate Education. Petersen is an academic and career advisor in CACD.

Carter is an associate professor, associate director of undergraduate programs, and pre-veterinary advisor in the School of Biological Sciences in the WSU College of Arts and Sciences.

Pumphrey is the academic and internship coordinator in the Dept. of Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Textiles in the WSU College of Agricultural, Natural, and Human Resource Sciences.

The call for nominations will come out soon for WSU ACADA awards for the 2014-15 year. Please watch for the announcement on the website at http://wsuacada.org.
