PULLMAN, Wash. – The Provost’s Office and Global Campus will co-sponsor the third in a series of faculty workshops on new ways of engaging students and improving instruction. The noon- 2 p.m. April 15 workshop in CUE 518 will include lunch.
It will feature four WSU faculty members talking about their favorite tech tools:
• Rebecca Cooney, clinical assistant professor in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, will discuss Screencast-o-matic and VoiceThread.
• Brett Atwood, clinical associate professor and director of digital initiatives at Murrow, will discuss Screenr, Narrable, SoundCloud and Oculus Rift.
• Dick Zollars, associate director and professor in the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering, will discuss clickers.
• Jan Koal, faculty member in the Department of Finance and Management Science in the College of Business, will discuss YouCam 6.

The series of faculty-led workshops is part of a university-wide effort by the provost’s office to improve student retention. Each workshop is organized by the Global Campus eLearning Services team, which works to offer faculty, whether on-campus or online, the latest teaching tools and resources.
The October 2013 workshop (video) covered the flipped classroom, in which foundational material is learned outside of class and course time is used for discussion. That approach enlivens the classroom for both students and faculty, panelists said.
The March 2014 workshop (video) covered the Socrative program, in which students respond to quizzes on their smartphones and laptops; POGIL, in which students are divided into groups of four; and team-based learning.
