SEATTLE – Nader Tehrani, a professor and head of the Department of Architecture at MIT, will lecture on “catalyst structures” as part of Washington State University’s Callison Distinguished Lecture.
The free, public presentation will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, in the auditorium of the Seattle Public Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Seattle. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m.
Tehrani is a principal of NADAAA, a design firm dedicated to the advancement of design innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration and intensive dialogue with the construction industry.
While architectural types invariably require structure, rarely does structural organization become a significant protagonist in figuration of the type – transforming it beyond its conventional configuration, says Tehrani.
“Structural systems are, of course, often defining features; but they do not, in themselves, demonstrate figurative possibilities beyond repetition, iteration and variation,’’ he says. “What distinguish the artifacts are the extraordinary, anomalous and transformative properties of structural figures that invade the architectural type – an interaction that causes the emergence of new spatial, formal and material organizations.’’
