March 29: School of Food Science hosts regional trivia bowl

IFT-logo-80PULLMAN, Wash. – Six teams of students from seven universities will compete at Washington State University as the School of Food Science hosts a regional quiz bowl, part of the annual Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) Pacific West area meeting.

The IFTSA College Bowl Competition will start at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in Food Science and Human Nutrition T101. The winner will compete in the national bowl in New Orleans in June.

Other meeting activities include a product development cookie competition, guest speakers from the food industry and a closing banquet. All faculty, staff, alumni and food industry representatives are welcome to attend the quiz competition and register to attend the closing banquet. During the college bowl, two teams at a time will be quizzed on their food science knowledge in a “Jeopardy” style competition. Participating schools are: University of Idaho/WSU School of Food Science, Oregon State University, University of California Davis, San Jose State, Fresno State and the University of British Columbia.

During the gathering, students will network with fellow food science students as well as industry professionals who serve as judges, moderators and spectators.

“As a whole, this event provides a great opportunity for students to broaden their network and get to know people they will likely work with in their future food industry careers,” said Allison Baker, IFTSA Pacific West area representative and WSU School of Food Science graduate student, who is coordinating the event. “The competition encourages participants and spectators alike to get excited about food science.”

Since 1985, the IFTSA College Bowl Competition has tested the knowledge of student teams from across the United States in the areas of food science and technology, history of foods and food processing, food law and general IFT/food-related trivia.

The college bowl is designed to facilitate interaction among students from different universities, stimulate the students’ desire to accumulate and retain knowledge, and provide a forum for students to engage in friendly competition.
