PULLMAN, Wash. – The sacred music of African-American culture will be presented in a free, public concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Bryan Hall at Washington State University to mark Black History Month in February.
The WSU University Singers and guest will perform the music’s many genres, including jazz, gospel and spirituals. Selections will include Robert Ray’s “He Never Failed Me Yet” and Byron J. Smith’s “Worthy to Be Praised,” as well as the spirituals “Hush! Somebody’s Callin’ My Name” and “Soon-ah Will Be Done.”
Tenor Brian Carter will present Mark Hayes’ spiritual “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” and WSU’s VoJazz will perform “Swingin’ with the Saints” and “Music Down in My Soul.”
The S&S combo will perform Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday” and Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free.” The combo consists of Greg Yasinitsky – alto saxophone, Brian Ward – piano, David Jarvis – drums, Dave Snider – bass, Brad Ard – guitar and Juliana Witt – piano.
