PULLMAN, Wash. – Student alcohol and drug abuse prevention will be the topic of a free, public panel discussion 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the CUB auditorium. The Daily Evergreen student newspaper will host the event and run a series of related articles in advance.
These efforts are part of a growing community focus to help Washington State University students deal responsibly with alcohol and drugs, according to the newspaper, especially in light of recent tragedies such as injuries from falls and the death of freshman Kenny Hummel.
During the first half of the discussion, a moderator will pose questions to the panel. The second half will be open for questions from the audience.
Topics of discussion will include the social behaviors associated with substance abuse, the laws police enforce both on campus and off, the policies the hospital has for treating patients and how best to educate students about asking for help for themselves and friends.
A series of Evergreen articles addressing these issues will run Oct. 24-30.
Christine Rushton, editor in chief of the newspaper, will moderate. Panelists will include Elson S. Floyd, WSU president; Bruce Wright, director of WSU Health and Wellness Services; Stacey Hust, WSU research expert in drug abuse prevention; Stacey Aggabao, Pullman Regional Hospital emergency room director; Taylor Hennessey, Associated Students of WSU president; Bob Cady, member of the WSU alcohol and drug task force; and Bill Gardner, WSU police chief.
