PULLMAN, Wash. – Larry Johnson, founder of ILX Lightwave Corp., will speak on laser technology and its applications at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in ETRL 101 at Washington State University Pullman.
ILX Lightwave has been a market and technology leader in laser diode instrumentation and test systems for more than 27 years. Johnson served as president and CEO of the Bozeman, Mont.-based company, which was sold to Newport Corp. in 2011.
More than 99 percent of the lasers manufactured in the world are semiconductor laser diodes. The seminar will provide an overview of laser diode technology and applications, including the theory of operation, types of laser diodes, operating characteristics, handling precautions, reliability and applications.
Prior to founding ILX Lightwave, Johnson was a research group leader at Rosemount Inc., where he was responsible for developing technology related to fiber optic sensors for industrial applications. He held a number of technical positions in aerospace and government laboratories, where his work focused on electro-optical systems for defense and environmental monitoring.
He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in optical sciences from the University of Arizona and a B.S. in engineering physics from the Colorado School of Mines.
