Pain medicine study seeking dogs with osteoarthritis

PULLMAN, Wash. – Pet owners are invited to bring their dogs with osteoarthritis to be part of a Washington State University study testing a medicine to control pain and inflammation. Enrollees will need to bring their dog to the WSU veterinary teaching hospital clinic four times over an approximate five-week period.

The comparative orthopedic research laboratory in WSU veterinary clinical sciences is evaluating the effectiveness, safety and oral acceptability of a flavored tablet for dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the shoulder, hip, knee or elbow joint.

The medicine is a member of a class of products known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that are used to control pain and inflammation. The product is approved for dogs in Europe, but not in the U.S.
