Secretary of state speaks during Civic Engagement Week

PULLMAN, Wash. – A record more than 8,000 students participated in service projects at Washington State University this year. Civic Engagement Week April 14-20 will include projects, information tables, a public forum and a leadership awards ceremony – with the Washington secretary of state – on April 18.

The 2013 Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction (LEAD) event will celebrate student leaders and those who have mentored and supported their efforts. Free to the public, it will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the CUB senior ballroom.

Student officers will be acknowledged and new officers inaugurated. A reception, with time to view Gallery of Leadership student projects, will follow. Then presentation of the 2013 President’s Awards for Leadership will begin, with comments from WSU President Elson S. Floyd and an address by Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman.

Since 1996, the awards have been bestowed annually on students and others who advance leadership and engagement at WSU. Recipients demonstrate exceptional leadership and service to the university and the community and/or support leadership development and engagement of WSU students.

Awardees were reviewed using the framework of the social change model of leadership. The 2013 award categories are student, student group, faculty and staff and community organization.
