WBC 2013 wine label
WBC, the popular Washington State University Alumni Association wine club, pairs a premium Cougar-connected wine with a label design selected from graduating senior contest entries. The result is a distinctive collector’s item celebrating the enduring connection between art and wine.

The 2013 release features a 2009 cabernet sauvignon provided by Cougar alumni Craig and Vicki Leuthold from Maryhill Winery in Goldendale, Wash. Maryhill was named the 2009 Washington Winery of the Year by Washington’s Wine Press Northwest magazine.

One of the first 100 wineries in the state, Maryhill produces 19 wines and has won 27 awards in the past year. The winery welcomes more than 75,000 visitors per year.

The Leutholds call the 2009 cabernet sauvignon their favorite wine; it recently received a 90-point rating from Wine Enthusiast magazine. On the palate, its full body carries a myriad of flavors including raspberry, vanilla, cherry, bittersweet chocolate and white pepper. The bright and exhilarating finish transforms into a tantalizing linger.

WSU graduating senior Danica Wixom created the winning label artwork, a pastel-hued depiction of flowers and fruit that mirrors the bright notes of the wine. Wixom is a humanities and Spanish major enrolled in the Honors College. She received a $500 scholarship from WBC and the WSUAA for her creative efforts.
