WSU (10-18, 6-11 Pac-12) shot 39.7 percent from the floor and scored 20 points off of 17 California (26-2, 16-1 Pac-12) turnovers. The Golden Bears shot 44.3 percent, knocked down 11 three pointers and posted a 44-31 rebounding advantage.
Galdeira broke Jazmine Perkins’ previous freshman single-season scoring mark of 413 points in 2008-09 and owns 418 points. Galdeira also grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman forward Mariah Cooks added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Cougars, who also received seven points from both junior forward Sage Romberg and freshman guard Taylor Edmondson. California was led by Layshia Clarendon’s 26 points.
Galdeira got the scoring started for the Cougars with a three from straight away and redshirt-senior guard Katie Grad added a steal and coast-to-coast layup.
Minutes later, Galdeira continued her hot start with a driving layin and a baseline jumper. WSU also received jumpers from redshirt-junior Ireti Amojo and junior forward Hana Potter to tie the game at 17 at the 11:21 mark. Galdeira gave the Cougars their first lead of the game, 21-20, with a three from the left wing with 10:43 remaining.
The Golden Bears answered with six straight points but Romberg followed with a three from the right wing and then finished off a drive with a jumper off the glass on the next possession. Cooks capped a 7-0 spurt for WSU with a spinning layup from the low block to give the Cougars a 27-25 lead.
Both teams traded baskets over the next couple minutes before Cooks hit a three in the right corner and Awa added a free throw for a 35-33 WSU lead with 1:56 remaining. California answered in a big way, hitting three three-pointers to close the half with a 9-0 run and a 42-35 lead.
Both teams shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes but the Golden Bears hit seven threes to own the seven-point advantage. Galdeira led WSU with 10 points while Cal’s Clarendon put up 18.
WSU opened the second half receiving layups from Galdeira and Awa to cut the California lead to three. The Golden Bears countered with a 9-0 run, sparked by a Clarendon three, to build a double-digit lead, 51-39, at the 14:39 mark.
Midway through the half, Galdeira tallied three straight points and Romberg followed with a jumper to cut the Cal lead to 10. But Cal again countered with a 9-0 run as Clarendon scored her final four points to put the Golden Bears up for good.
WSU wraps up its regular season Saturday hosting No. 4 Stanford University at noon on the Pac-12 Networks.
