Free jazz concert highlights faculty solo bass

PULLMAN, Wash. – Frederick “Dave” Snider, Washington State University music faculty member, will present a free, public jazz recital of his arrangements and performance on solo string and electric bass at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Kimbrough Concert Hall.

Guest performers will include WSU music advisor Richard Kriehn on mandolin and the WSU faculty jazz ensemble, Jazz Northwest. It includes Gregory Yasinitsky and Dave Hagelganz on saxophones, David Turnbull on trumpet, Brian Ward on organ and piano and Dave “Dr. Time” Jarvis on drums.

Snider has prepared music for solo electric bass ranging from “Amazing Grace” to Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There” to Marcus Miller’s “Scoop.” On upright bass, he will present a solo version of the Beatles tune, “Come Together.” Kriehn, who performs regularly on the Garrison Keillor public radio program “A Prairie Home Companion,” will combine with Snider on gypsy jazz charts.

Special arrangements by Snider for Jazz Northwest include Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus,” Phil Wilson’s “Outrageous Motha” and Trombone Shorty’s “Hurricane.” The concert also will feature Yasinitsky’s composition “Blues for a King,” honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.
