New vice presidency will promote innovation

PULLMAN, Wash. – To better prepare Washington State University for technological and academic innovation, President Elson S. Floyd has created a new position: vice president of the Global Campus.

“This is a time of rapid and unprecedented change for our university, and universities across the globe, in the use of digital technologies,” Floyd said. “While technological advances allow WSU to reach diverse new populations, they also bring new challenges as we chart the future. It is important for us to have strong, visionary leadership in this environment.”
Floyd has appointed David Cillay as the new vice president.

“Dr. Cillay brings experience and expertise to the post, as well as a truly innovative spirit,” Floyd said. “His appointment will help ensure that WSU remains dynamic, accessible and inclusive. Under David’s leadership, the Global Campus was launched July 1, 2012. This new campus will be a vital part of the future of WSU.”

Floyd said the Global Campus will be charged with several new responsibilities:
  • Expand WSU’s educational market share
  • Support faculty in development and implementation of technological and pedagogical innovation
  • Ensure that WSU remains open and accessible through digital and eLearning tools and strategies
“I’m honored to be able to help the university select a judicious path through this ever-changing landscape,” Cillay said. “The Global Campus is already helping faculty implement new technologies, and WSU Online has been increasing access to a WSU education since 1992. This is a wonderful opportunity to build on that work as WSU explores these new exciting digital technologies.”

Cillay said the new goals of the Global Campus also include evaluating emerging models for nontraditional higher education program delivery, disseminating WSU research to a global audience and helping the university navigate the evolving regulations that govern eLearning.

But, Cillay said, the overall mission can be summed up in a single word: “Engagement. The Global Campus will help the university engage with the world of educational innovations, bring the best of it back to WSU, then bring the best of WSU to the world.”
