Vet Med alumni volunteer time, skills at vet clinic

PULLMAN, Wash. – Stan Coe, who graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Washington State University in 1957, has helped run a free vet clinic in downtown Seattle for 26 years.  The Doney Memorial Pet Clinic operates two days a month in a basement on the corner of 2nd and South Main Street, Seattle.

The clinic serves low income and homeless people and their pets and operates solely on donations.  Muriel Slattum, who graduated in 1985 with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from WSU, drives five and a half hours from Pullman to volunteer her time to the clinic.
Other volunteers hand out food donations at the clinic.  Pets receive basic medical care, such as routine check-ups and vaccinations.
Coe said the animals are a large part of their owners’ lives.
“A lot of (the owners) don’t have family and that cat is a constant companion,” Coe said.
