WSU trio lands regional academic advising awards

PULLMAN, Wash. – Three Washington State University advisors have been recognized for excellence in their profession by the Region 8 District of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), an international organization with more than 10,000 members. Those honored include:

  • Whiting

    Brooke Whiting, undergraduate academic coordinator in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering and Architecture, won the Region 8 Excellence in Advising: Professional Academic Advisor Award. It is for experienced professional advisors who have a demonstrated record of excellence in academic advising.

  • Ross

    Kyle Ross, academic and career advisor in the Center for Advising and Career Development, University College, received the Region 8 Excellence in Advising: New Advisor Award. This is given to new faculty or professional advisors of three or fewer years who, early in their career, have demonstrated qualities associated with excellence in academic advising.

  • Comstock

    Megan Comstock, academic coordinator in the College of Business, received the Excellence in Advising: New Advisor Certificate of Merit.

“It is quite an honor for WSU to have three winners, which underscores the university’s emphasis on high-quality advising services for students,” Sarah Ann Hones, president of the WSU Academic Advising Association, the local chapter of NACADA.

Hones noted that several WSU employees play significant roles in national, regional and local advising organizations. Lisa Laughter, a WSU alumna and associate director of student services and instructor in the Murrow College of Communication, holds the office of secretary in the Region 8 Steering Committee, chairs NACADA’s Member Career Services committee, serves on the board of the Emerging Leaders Program, and serves on the experts review board for the Council for the Advancement of Standards. Susan Poch, a WSU alumna and associate dean of the University College, serves as a mentor to NACADA’s Emerging Leaders Program. Yung-Hwa Anna Chow, advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences, leads the NACADA Commission on English as a Second Language and International Student Advising.

Region 8 of NACADA consists of members from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, as well as British Columbia and Alberta.

The awards will be presented at its annual conference held April 29-May 1 in in Anchorage.
