Supporting student veterans focus of WSU Tri-Cities events

RICHLAND, Wash. – With veterans making up 8 percent of the student body at Washington State University Tri-Cities, Veterans Awareness Week focuses on supporting students as they transition from the military to civilian life and an academic setting.

The Veterans & Allies student organization is coordinating a series of events on campus intended to educate faculty, staff and students about ways to support student veterans. Such activities contribute to WSU Tri-Cities’ designation by the state Department of Veterans Affairs as a Veteran Supportive Campus and by G.I. Jobs magazine as a Military-Friendly School.

• Veteran Student Round Table and Panel Discussion, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, West Building 138. Round table members will address unique issues confronting student veterans. Members include: Tara Atchley, representing women veterans; Erick Flieger, VetCorps Project; and Scott Dawson, past-president of the veterans student organization. After opening remarks, the audience will be asked to join the dialogue, share resources and brainstorm solutions to proactively address campus community needs.
  • Boots to Books: The Academic Transition and Experience, 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, West Building Atrium. Panelists of veterans representing staff, students and community members will share their experiences about the transition from military to civilian and student life.
  • Welcome Reception for Psychologist Steven Malone, 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, just inside the West Building entrance. Malone is newly appointed to WSU Tri-Cities to provide free life coaching and counseling to veterans as part of the Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership grant.

All events are free to the public and include light refreshments. WSU Tri-Cities is at 2710 Crimson Way in Richland — from George Washington Way, pass Hanford High School, turn right on Sprout Road, then left into campus.

In addition, Troop Care Package donation boxes are on campus through Nov. 15, as students are collecting items to send to soldiers through the Make a Difference Day organization.
