Darfur conflict, controversy topic of lecture, seminar

PULLMAN, Wash. – Conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan and the debate about whether or not it is genocide will be discussed in a free, public lecture reschuduled to 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in the CUB ballroom at Washington State University.
 
Speaker and author Mahmood Mamdani, director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University, Uganda, and the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University, will hold a book signing afterward.
 
Mamdani is the author of “Saviors and Survivors: Darfur, Politics and the War on Terror” (Pantheon Books, 2009). His books include “Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War and the Roots of Terror” (Doubleday, 2006), “When Victims Become Killers: Colonialism, Nativism and Genocide in Rwanda” (Princeton University Press, 2001) and four others.
 
Mamdani will host a smaller seminar to discuss his talk, his book and the controversial questions surrounding the Darfur conflict reschuled to 1-3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in Cue 518. Seating is limited; to attend, please contact Jesse Spohnholz at spohnj@wsu.edu.
