WSU hosts regional ‘smackdown’ – badminton style

PULLMAN, Wash. – Though “smackdown” may conjure images of beefy wrestlers, it also characterizes the tenacity of play at the annual badminton tournament to be hosted by Washington State University on Saturday, Nov. 17.

“People take badminton seriously,” said Richard Elgar, assistant director of the WSU Foley Institute and a member of the WSU badminton club. “We get some really good players!” The contest draws competitors from throughout the region, including Spokane, Wash., Missoula, Mont., and Canada, he said.

Teams will vie for the Smackdown Belt: “We won it last in fall 2011,” Elgar said. Anyone interested in putting together a two-person team can register by contacting Elgar at dr_lager@hotmail.com.

The tournament is hosted by University Recreation and put on by the badminton club.
