Global engagement touted as international scholars honored

PULLMAN, Wash. – A global engagement talk and award presentation will highlight the Eighth Annual International Scholar Recognition Reception at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Honors Hall lounge. Refreshments will be served; harpist Daniella Clark will perform.
 
The event recognizes the contributions of international scholars. More than 500 are working at WSU this academic year. Certificates of appreciation will be given to departing exchange scholars in attendance.
 
Guest speaker Guy Palmer, Regents professor and director of WSU’s Paul G. Allen School of Global Animal Health, will talk about the importance of international engagement generally and the mission of the school specifically.
 
The Robert C. Bates Award (named for the WSU emeritus provost) will be presented by Bates to Jessica Cassleman, assistant dean of the Honors College, for her contributions to global engagement.
 
Departing scholars who will receive certificates of appreciation include:
 
• Min Jeong Kim, South Korea, Institute of Biological Chemistry, hosted by David Gang, investigating the role that enzymes and genes play in regulating plant metabolism in specialized plant tissues.
• Yongping Zhang, Peoples Republic of China, physics and astronomy, hosted by Chuanwei Zhang, quantum computational condensed matter physics.
• Mei-Ling Tang, Republic of China/Taiwan, finance and management science, Gene Lai, international finance.
• Xiaoqiao Lu, Australia, biological systems engineering, Jeffery Ullman, collaborative research on chemical analysis of water-borne environmental pollutants.
• Hulya Tastan, hospitality business management, Dogan Gursoy, accounting practices related to tourism.
• Boris Delimarschi, Moldova (Fulbright scholar), international business, Jerman Rose, management information systems research.
