Weed control alternative investigated for organic land

PULLMAN, Wash. – Carol Miles, a vegetable horticulturalist at Washington State University’s Mount Vernon Northwest Research and Extension Center, has begun researching biodegradable alternatives to the black plastic sheets used on WSU organic land. The plastic suppresses weed growth but is nonrenewable and nonrecyclable.
 
After trying multiple alternatives, Miles and WSU plant pathologist Debra Inglis are researching a plant-based fabric recommended by Karen Leonas, professor and chair of WSU apparel, merchandising, design and textiles.
