Florence and Rome are excitingly critical locations to witness the development of western art history. Before the 19th century, Italy was comprised of individually governed city states. As we view and investigate iconically famous Italian painting, sculpture, and architectural works, we will experientially compare the cultural and historical venues of Florence and Rome. We will tour famous Roman cathedrals, fountains, squares, witnessing the layers of history that Rome offers: Roman walls, amphitheaters, artifacts, and cobbled streets; Gothic and Renaissance altarpieces and artistic masterworks by Raphael and Michelangelo; famous Baroque fountains, sculptures, and paintings by Bernini and Caravaggio.
