Plateau Center faculty member wins with short story

PULLMAN, Wash. – The short story “Children of the Basalt” by Jeanette Weaskus, clinical assistant professor in the Washington State University Plateau Center for American Indian Studies, recently was named the winner of the international 2011 Imagining Indigenous Futurisms writing contest.

Sponsored by Portland State University’s Indigenous Nations Studies Program, the contest is open to native, first nations, indigenous and aboriginal students enrolled at a university, college or high school.

Weaskus, of the Nez Perce Tribe, successfully defended her dissertation in rhetoric and composition at WSU in the spring, when the story was submitted.  She is teaching courses in the Native American studies minor program.
