PULLMAN, Wash Evelyn Hirt has received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) William W. Middleton Distinguished Service Award. She is an engineering and technology management (ETM) graduate (’02) of Washington State University.
The award is presented every three years by the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board to honor someone “who, over a long and sustained period of leadership, contributed in an exemplary manner.”
Hirt is recognized for exemplary service and inspirational leadership. She is credited for “enthusiastically promoting IEEE as a desirable professional home and for mentoring volunteers around the world in support of
member engagement and … cooperation.”
She is a senior member in IEEE, was the IEEE-USA president in 2010 and has served on the IEEE American Association of Engineering Societies.
Hirt has worked in the engineering field for 38 years. She is principal engineer in the operational systems directorate at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Wash., where she has worked since 1994.
Her technical interests focus on systems, controls and engineering management. Her professional experiences bridge the industrial, government and academic communities, and she holds leadership positions in professional technical societies and service organizations.
Hirt earned a master’s degree in engineering management from WSU and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Detroit. She also received a certificate in project management from WSU’s ETM program.
