Cougars’ athletic department will aid in academic costs

(From The Spokesman-Review, Aug. 17, 2011)

Faced with a $40 million budget cut in the biennium that ends with the 2013 fiscal year, Washington State University President Elson S. Floyd is looking for help wherever he can find it. And he will get some from his athletic department.

Under the Pac-12 media contract, which will not begin for another year, WSU athletics should net around $15 million the first year. The average is expected to be near $21 million over the 12-year contract. And a portion of that will go back into WSU’s academic budget.

Until 2012, however, WSU’s athletic finances will remain very tight.
