COLUMBUS, Ohio WSU’s varsity eight boat claimed its second victory of the weekend as it defeated 11th-ranked Ohio State, Sunday in a dual regatta at Griggs Reservoir on Scioto River. The Cougar women’s rowing team, ranked 17th in the country, won two of the four races.
This performance followed a strong showing on Saturday, when WSU’s varsity eight boat defeated No. 15 Michigan, while the varsity four boat went undefeated with wins over Michigan and No. 7 Michigan State Saturday, as WSU women’s rowing competed in two duals at Griggs Reservoir on Scioto River at Columbus, Ohio.
“I was proud of everyone’s efforts today,” WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said on Sunday. “It was great to get the varsity eight win.”
On Saturday, the WSU crew pulled a win over 15th-ranked Michigan and a tight race against No. 7 Michigan State. On Sunday, WSU’s varsity eight, including (coxswain- Lexi Ryman, Sarah Wolff, Hannah deVos, Allie Reilly, Corinna Sharick, Christina Kinck, Crystal Martin, Lisa Roman, bow- Annie Eastwood), was ready to face off against 11th-ranked OSU. In a gutsy performance, the Cougars were able to out-stroke the Buckeyes and notch a 1.4 second victory, clocking in with a time of 6:42.8, ahead of OSU’s 6:44.2.
The Cougars’ novice eight boat (coxswain- Alex Biswas, Kerry Hassall, Elise Jones, Chelsey Stotler, Hannah Jacobs, Ashlee Bonahoom, Gina Head, Ella Odland, bow- Kendall Boliba) captured its second-straight victory with a win over Ohio State Sunday after defeating Michigan State Saturday afternoon. WSU finished with a time of 6:59.7, just under eight seconds ahead of OSU with a time of 7:08.0. The Buckeyes’ second novice eight also competed, placing third with a time of 7:30.3.
Washington State’s varsity four crew (coxswain- Emily Boquet, Carly Johnson, Liz Beck, Rachel McNeil, Liana DeMaris) suffered its first setback of the weekend, finishing three seconds behind Ohio State with a time of 7:43.6. The Cougars’ varsity four defeated both Michigan and Michigan State Saturday. OSU’s second varsity four placed third with a time of 7:49.4.
In a close race, WSU’s second varsity eight (coxswain- Cayla Ravancho, Natasha Ostopovich, Justine Galbraith, Mollie McCabe, Liz England, Stephanie Hinkle, Ann Hoag, Alison Smith, bow- Sarah Powell) fell to Ohio State by 1.8 seconds. The Cougars clocked a time of 6:57.4, behind the Buckeyes’ 6:55.6.
Next up the Cougars return to the Pacific Northwest to face Pac-10 foe Oregon State, Saturday, April 30 at Lowell, Ore.
