PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University women’s rugby team has qualified to compete April 16 to defend its Division II national tournament title.

There are 16 college teams in the playoff, with Western Washington University seeded No. 1, and WSU No. 3. (See seeding chart below.)

The Cougars’ first match, if they are able to attend, would be held in Kissimmee, Fla., will be against the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. If the Cougs win, they will be in the quarterfinals the next day. Unfortunately, finances are very real problem this year.
“Every member of this team is on the same page and that makes us dangerous,” said Coach Leah Hammon about her intramural club team’s ability to defend the 2010 national title. “If we continue to play to our strengths, I have no doubt we will advance to the semi-finals and be in a position to contend for a second straight title.”

After losing a difficult regional championship match to Western Washington University on Sunday, WSU advanced as the number two seed from the region.

“We played really strong in the regional tournament and worked really well together overcoming adversity with injuries and player shifts,” said player Megan Bonny. “We feel confident as we go into the 16s.”

“We beat a talented, quick Santa Clara team Saturday to earn a spot in the regional final, while WWU made it through with a forfeit-bye,” Hammond said. “That second day fatigue could have been the difference between winning and losing. We played strong unified rugby.”
Player Renee Maddex was injured for the tournament but still traveled to watch her team contend for the regional title.
“The Cougs have never looked so good to me,” she said. “They were flawless and flowed perfectly as one team. I am working … to join my girls to fight and defend our national title.”
