PULLMAN – The Washington State University men’s basketball team (19-12) will host Long Beach State (22-12) in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), the organization announced Sunday evening.

 
The Cougars are the No. 2 seed in the Boston College region and will remain at home to face the seventh-seeded 49ers, Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. PT at Beasley Coliseum live on ESPNU.
 
This is the fifth all-time NIT bid for the Cougars and second in three years, as they last participated in the tournament in 2009. The school’s best showing in the tournament came in 1995 when the Cougars appeared in the quarterfinals. WSU is 4-4 all-time in the NIT, appearing in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2009. The Cougs have won at least one game in three of the four tournaments they have appeared in and are 3-0 at home in the NIT.
 
The Boston College region of the tournament bracket includes a matchup between No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 6 Harvard, with the winner facing the winner of WSU-Long Beach State game. Top-seeded Boston College takes on McNeese State and the winner awaits either Northwestern or Milwaukee.
 
The other three No. 1 seeds are Alabama, Colorado and Virginia Tech. WSU is joined by California as the only Pac-10 teams to make the field of 32. California is the No. 4 seed in the Colorado region and hosts Mississippi in the first round.
 
The first three rounds will be played at the campus site of the higher seeds. The semifinals and finals of the NIT will be played at Madison Square Garden in New York, March 29 and 31.
