First Afghan grad of UW medical school gives keynote

PULLMAN – Washington State University alumna Anita Afzali, the first Afghan student to graduate from the University of Washington School of Medicine, will give the keynote address at 4:30 p.m. during the Health Careers EXPO 4-6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, in the CUB junior ballroom.
 
A student panel discussion will be at 5 p.m., followed by break-out sessions at 5:45 p.m. Representatives from many health programs will staff information tables.
 
The expo is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services, College of Sciences advising office, College of Nursing advising office, Native American health sciences, WAMMI medical education program, team mentoring program, and nutrition and exercise physiology.
 
Azfali, a doctor specializing in internal medicine in Seattle, graduated from the WSU Honors College with a B.S. in genetics and molecular biology in 2001. She is completing a gastroenterology/hepatology specialty fellowship at UW.
 
As a WSU undergraduate, Afzali served as ASWSU director of minority affairs and was active on the Council of Multicultural Student Presidents, MESA (mathematics, engineering, science achievement program) and other student organizations.
