Jazz festival to feature award-winning composer

PULLMAN – Jazz organist, pianist and composer Delbert Bump will perform noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, during the 2010 WSU Jazz Festival in Bryan Hall Theater.

 
Bump will play with the award-winning WSU Jazz Big Band directed by Greg Yasinitsky. The performance will feature faculty soloists Dave Hagelganz, saxophone; Frederick “Dave” Snider, bass; David Jarvis, drums; and Yasinitsky, saxophone.
 
The concert will feature Bump’s arrangement of the Thelonious Monk classic “Well You Needn’t” and Bump’s original composition “Exactly My Point.” The program also will include Bill Liston’s “Tri-Bop,” Mike Tomaro’s “Song For Her,” Yasinitsky’s arrangement of Sam Jones’ “Unit Seven” and Los Angeles pianist Matt Harris’ arrangement of “Honky Tonk Woman,” adapted from the Rolling Stones’ hit song.
 
The festival will feature school groups from throughout the Northwest performing in Kimbrough Concert Hall 8 a.m.-noon and 2:20-5 p.m. Bump will present a clinic at 1 p.m in Bryan Hall Theater and WSU faculty members will present clinics at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at various locations in the Kimbrough Music Building.
 
All events are free to the public.
 
Bump maintains a full schedule as a performer in the San Francisco Bay area and nationwide. He is the leader of an organ trio, a Latin sextet and an organ-driven big band. He has more than 30 years of experience as a jazz educator and serves on the faculties of the University of California at Davis and Solano Community College.
 
Bump has released seven CDs and is featured on many additional recordings, representing various aspects of his unique performance and compositional style. He has composed for big bands, combos, television and radio and has received numerous awards.
