PULLMAN – WSU TRiO Programs will commemorate National TRiO Day in Pullman with a reception from 1-3 p.m. on Feb. 26 in Lighty Student Services 260W conference room, and with community service projects from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Feb. 27.
WSU students, staff and faculty are invited to participate.
The service projects include assisting the staff members at Avalon Care Center, a long term care facility for seniors and adults, and at Orphan Acres, which provides rescue, rehabilitation and public education of horses and wildlife.
TRiO programs are funded through the U.S. Department of Education to serve students who meet one or more of the eligibility criteria: first-generation, low-income, documented disability and/or a member of a group underrepresented in graduate education. By order of a Congressional Resolution, National TRiO Day is established to celebrate the success and focus attention on the continued need for TRiO programs. A tradition of National TRiO Day is for TRiO programs to perform community service as a way to say “thank you” for their support.
TRiO Programs throughout the WSU system include Student Support Services, the McNair Achievement Program, Upward Bound Omak/Okanogan, Upward Bound Ferry/Stevens and Upward Bound Yakima. These programs receive nearly $1.5 million in federal grant funding and serve more than 600 students annually.
