PULLMAN – The WSU Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will welcome the Pullman Community Band to the Bryan Hall Theatre stage in a free public concert featuring an evening of band favorites and contemporary works at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3.
The Symphonic Band, conducted by David Turnbull, and Pullman Community Band, directed by Heidi Jarvis, will join forces to open the concert with traditional band favorites, including Fillmore’s “American’s We” march, Grainger’s “Irish Tune from Country Derry,” and Shostakovich’s rousing ”Festive Overture.” The relationship between these town and gown ensembles goes back many years and is always highlight of the band year at WSU.
The Wind Symphony, conducted by Timothy Robblee, will perform a broad spectrum of works ranging from a Mozart wind octet from the “Marriage of Figaro,” Charles Ives’ whimsical “Variations on America,” to works composed in the past 10 years. Two works of northwest composers will be featured: “First Flight,” composed by WSU’s own Gregory Yasinitsky and “Slow Voyage Through Night” by Tacoma-based Robert Hutchinson.
