WSU veterans speak at ceremony

RICHLAND – Three students who served in the armed forces will speak at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.10, at a special ceremony to honor veterans at WSU Tri-Cities.

The pre-Veterans Day event is located in the West Building Atrium, 2710 University Drive. It is coordinated by the WSU Tri-Cities Office of Veterans Affairs.

Admission is free and open to the public — local veterans are especially encouraged to attend.

The ceremony starts with an honor guard presenting the U.S. flag and the singing of the National Anthem, performed by Jessica Workman, a sophomore majoring in business, and Marlena Workman, a graduate student working on a master’s in counseling psychology. The speakers will be introduced by BetsyAnn Pittman, a junior majoring in psychology, who served as senior airman in U.S. Air Force from 2006-2009.

Speakers are:
• Scott Dawson, a junior majoring in engineering, who served as a corporal in the U.S .Marine Corps from 2001-2005 in active duty.

• Theresa Whittington, a sophomore majoring in psychology. She was a senior airman in the U.S. Air Force from 2002-2004 in active duty and in the reserves from 2004-2007.
• Robert “Bobby” Touchette, a freshman intending to major in nursing, who served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 2002-2008 in active duty and from 2008-2009 as a recruiter.
• Sherrly Schmunk, chairwoman of the “A Time of Remembrance” committee that honors fallen veterans by offering emotional support to the surviving families. She organizes community events to raise awareness and additional support.
