YAKIMA — Yakima Valley Community College Outreach and Multicultural Student Services department, in collaboration with WSU, will host “You & WSU” from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in YVCC’s Hopf Student Union Building.
This outreach event promotes higher education to Yakima and the surrounding community. It will target first generation students. Offering assistance through a personal approach, WSU and YVCC will share critical information regarding higher education.
The event will feature information and presentations for students and families. Topics covered include admission and deadlines, transferring from YVCC to WSU, financial aid and scholarships, resources for student success, and student and alumni panel. A free pizza dinner will be provided to participants.
The guest speaker will be John Fraire, vice president for enrollment management at WSU. Fraire is in charge of admissions, financial aid and scholarships, recruitment and records.
Fraire has worked for 30 years in the field of higher education, primarily in admissions and enrollment.  Previous to WSU, he worked at Truman State University in Missouri, Western Michigan University, Brooklyn College/City University of New York, Pace University (NYC), the community colleges in Chicago and Harvard University.
Fraire began his career as an Admissions Officer and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education at Harvard. Fraire also holds a master’s degree in history from Western Michigan University and currently is pursuing his doctorate at the Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Tony Sandoval, board member of the Central Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CWHCC) and a WSU alumnus, recommends that parents and students attend the event.
“Getting my education has allowed me to have better options in life,” he said. “I believe attending this event will benefit both potential students and their families.”
The whole community is invited to participate and can register online at the CWHCC website.
